Marion County SWAT Clubs Look to Expand During the 2013-2014 School Year

The 2013-2104 SWAT school year has begun! Marion County Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) is putting the finishing touches on a partnership with Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) to expand both messages.  The SADD Program is part of the Marion County Children’s Alliance.

The mission of SADD is “to provide students with the best prevention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, and other destructive decisions”.  This fits closely in line with SWAT’s mission to mobilize, educate and equip Florida youth to revolt against and de-glamorize Big Tobacco by uniting empowered youth working towards a tobacco free future. We look forward to equipping and empowering more youth throughout Marion County.  The SADD/SWAT collaboration will be introduced this year to three middle schools and two high schools in Marion County.

Fort King Middle School SWAT Students share information at the school's annual open house.

In addition, our three school-based SWAT programs in Fort King Middle School, Howard Middle School and Lake Weir High School are back in action for the new school year, as is our community-based program at St. John AME Church.  The clubs kicked off the school year by sharing information at school-based Open House events, educating other students as well as parents.  With Red Ribbon Week (October) and the Great American Smokeout (November) coming up, as well as the Marion County Legislative Delegation, these clubs are already off to sharpen their techniques to fight back against Big Tobacco. We look forward to sharing our successes throughout the year with you!
